Expanded polystyrene plates 50 mm thick

Polyfoam with a thickness of 50 mm is the most popular and affordable insulation for buildings. It consists of lightweight expanded polystyrene beads bonded together. It is due to the large number of air pockets that PSB has the ability to retain heat of protected structures. But, of course, it would not have become so popular if its advantages were limited only by its low cost.

The properties of the foam are directly related to its closed-cell structure and the characteristics of the raw materials. They determine both its advantages and disadvantages, although the quality of performance plays its role. For the production of any styrene boards, the same polymer granules are used. But to create solid products, they must be "glued" under certain conditions. Violation of the technology leads to a weakening of the bonds between the hollow balls and reduces the quality of the insulation.

Styrofoam specifications:

  • Light weight - air chambers account for 98% of the total sheet volume. As a result, even laying in two layers on the facade practically does not load the foundation of the building.
  • Thermal conductivity (R) in the range of 0.037-0.043 W / m ° C. With such values, foam plastic with a thickness of only 5 cm is quite capable of replacing 95 mm of mineral wool. And a comparison with brick in masonry shows a 14-fold superiority of polystyrene insulation at all.
  • Relatively low hygroscopicity at the level of 2-4% - closed cells, in principle, are unable to absorb water. Problems arise if the material contains cracks or areas with poorly "welded" granules to each other.
  • Vapor permeability - the foam passes through itself no more than 0.05 mg / m · h · Pa of humid air. This is a rather low figure, so if you have chosen styrene for wall insulation outside a residential building, take care of good supply and exhaust ventilation of the premises.

Many tend to attribute its toxicity to the disadvantages of foam. Polymers do vaporize styrene, which is harmful to the human body. In order for its content to decrease to safe concentrations of 0.002 mg / m 3, the insulation must be kept in the warehouse before getting to the construction site or into the house.

But what you can't close your eyes to is the low heat resistance of expanded polystyrene - when heated above +80 ° C, it begins to melt, and at +210 it lights up. At this moment, it is not so much the flame that is dangerous, but the toxins released into the air, which have more than once led to human casualties - the group of styrene smoke generation corresponds to the maximum indicator of D4. That is why the use of polystyrene is unacceptable in fire hazardous facilities.

Polyfoam PSB-S 50 GOST 15588-2014 (another name: PSB-S 50 expanded polystyrene) is the densest and most durable foam among PSB-S brands.

Polyfoam PSB-S 50 (PSBS 50) has the best performance in terms of density, strength, thermal conductivity and water absorption.

It has proven itself to be an economical and convenient thermal insulation material. For example, a foam wall with a thickness of only 12 centimeters in its heat-saving properties is equal to a two-meter brick wall or a four-meter wall made of reinforced concrete.

The service life of PSBS 50 is from 20 to 50 years (depending on operating conditions).

Polyfoam PSB-S 50 technical characteristics:

  • Foam density = 35 to 50 kg / m3.
  • Compressive strength at 10% deformation = not less than 0.2 MPa
  • Bending strength limit = not less than 0.35 MPa
  • Thermal conductivity = no more than 0.04 W / m2. x C
  • Water absorption = no more than 1.8% of the volume in 24 hours
  • Vapor permeability = 0.05 mg / (m x h x Pa)
  • Temperature range = -60 to +80
  • Flammability = G1
  • Self-burning time = 3s.
  • Service life = 20-50 years

Main characteristics and properties

Houses or apartments insulated with xps polystyrene allow you to reduce costs during the heating season and improve the thermal insulation of the room, preventing the appearance of dampness and mold on the walls.

Color

Silver polystyrene foam with carbon fiber has higher thermal insulation properties

In technical documentation, the standard color for expanded polystyrene plates is white. But if it is necessary to choose a material with higher thermal conductivity properties for warming a house, preference should be given to silvery plates of insulation, which contains nanographite, which is responsible for improving the quality of the material.

Structure

Subject to the technical production process, the output should be a material with a dense and uniform structure. When buying polystyrene plates, you need to pay special attention to this parameter. The presence of grooves, voids, seals or other defects indicates a poor-quality product.

Ideally, the mesh size is 0.05-0.08 mm. It is difficult for a person without experience to notice this difference. In a low-quality product, the size of the cells is increased, it is 1-2 mm.

The fine-pored structure of the XPS insulation is responsible for the minimum water absorption.

Weight and density

Expanded polystyrene with nanographite can withstand a pressure of 30 tons per square meter. m

It used to be thought that the quality of insulation depends on the density of the insulation. The higher it is, the more effective the protection. This opinion is mistakenly imposed by small manufacturers who save on various components in the manufacture of quality material. Large manufacturers are interested in creating insulation with a lower density, but while maintaining its thermal insulation qualities. For this, blowing agents, flame retardants, stabilizers, dyes, etc. are used. in the required quantity. XPS expanded polystyrene, made on modern equipment and in compliance with all technical standards with a lower weight, provides better thermal conductivity.

One example is TechnoNIKOL CARBON insulation, which contains nanographite. With a declared density of 28 kg / m³, the material is capable of withstanding loads of up to 300 kPA (this is about 30 tons per 1 m²).

If the presented material has a marking of 35 kg / m³, this is an indicator of a poor-quality material with low thermal conductivity.

The form

An experienced specialist, looking at the shape of the plates, can immediately tell about the quality of the insulation. The best insulation of the room can be carried out with polystyrene foam plates, the edge sides of which have an L-shaped edging. This ensures a tighter fit of the insulation sheets when mounted on the wall. Boards that do not contain such edging will have to be additionally insulated with foam, which will increase the cost in time and money.

Thermal conductivity

This is the main characteristic of penoplex, because of which it is chosen. Visual inspection will not say anything about this parameter, so you need to contact the supplier of the goods and ask for certificates. When comparing the data, you can choose the optimal type of insulation.

The thermal conductivity index for a quality product should correspond to 0.030 W / m-K. But these data can increase or decrease, depending on the type of finishing material and its composition.

Water absorption

This is another important aspect to consider when choosing a product. To evaluate it, you need a small piece of expanded polystyrene. It must be placed in a glass of water and left for a day. As a result, you can estimate how much water the sample has absorbed and how much is left in the beaker.

Sometimes a syringe with liquid is used to assess water absorption. With the help of a needle, an injection is made with water and, based on the size of the spot, conclusions are drawn about the quality of the insulation.

Strength

PPP does not emit harmful substances, therefore it can be used for internal work

High-quality insulation should have high strength characteristics with low weight. This is very important in the finishing process, since no one needs additional problems during transportation and fastening to the walls. Even long-term storage of the boards should not affect the shape and structure of the material.

Environmental friendliness and safety

High quality extruded polystyrene foam is absolutely harmless insulation for humans and the environment. One of the types of expanded polystyrene was awarded the “Leaf of Life” quality mark, which confirms the environmental friendliness of the product.

The use of insulation is regulated by SNiP 21-01-97, which deals with the fire safety of buildings and structures.

Lack of labeling is a reason to get acquainted with the certificate for released products. If it does not contain information about the environmental friendliness of the product, it is better to refuse the purchase.
